Warm and Well Fed Series I

(Providence) The United States has a 9.2% unemployment rate and Rhode Island has an 11.8% unemployment rate. These numbers are minimal compared to Spain's 20.3% unemployment rate unless you are one of the 11.8% of unemployed Rhode Islanders, in which case, unemployment is very significant to you. What does unemployment have to do with faith? Why should a priest write about this topic of mammon? Work is one of the earliest Biblical issues. This dilemma began at the fall of humanity:
In toil shall you eat its yield all the days of your life. Thorns and thistles shall it bring forth to you, as you eat of the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face shall you get bread to eat.
Ever since this curse, God has provided for human’s daily needs but God required humans to participate in the process. When Christ came, he challenged us to look for the transcendent God in the created world. Look for the actions of God in the everyday… it was an incarnational theology. This is the nature of a Sacramental Church (more about this in a later blog). In short, when times are hard, God cares and requires other people who use His name to do something about it. St. James tells us:
If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well," but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it?
This passage inspired me to put together this list of resources for those parishioners looking for jobs:
Accounting
Advertising
Education
STC
Human Resources
IT
Management
Non-Profit
Sales
Sociology
Sports
I will write an additional article titled Warm and Well Fed II on Branding oneself and Social Networking. Each of these topics have to deal with being our authentic self as Christ intended.
